Restoring Vintage Core Radiators
Classic cars were built in an era when radiators were designed to last, not be replaced. At Southern Core Radiators, we restore vintage core radiators using proven methods that respect the original design while ensuring reliable cooling for today’s driving conditions.
Older vehicles typically use brass and copper radiators, soldered by hand and designed for lower-pressure cooling systems. Over decades of use, these cores can become internally blocked with rust and scale, weakened at solder joints, or lose efficiency due to age. Even a radiator that looks tidy from the outside may no longer be doing its job.
Our approach is to preserve originality wherever possible. In many cases, we retain the original top and bottom tanks, side straps, and mounting points, replacing only the internal core. The new core is carefully matched to the engine’s cooling requirements while maintaining the correct appearance for the vehicle.
This process allows us to restore cooling performance without compromising authenticity, which is especially important for classic car restorations, club vehicles, and collector cars.
Our vintage radiator restoration services include:
Complete inspection and pressure testing
Internal cleaning and descaling
Full radiator re-coring using brass and copper cores
Repair of leaks, solder joints, and mounts
Cooling improvements where required, without changing the external look
Built for New Zealand conditions
Classic vehicles in New Zealand often face long summer drives, stop-start town traffic, open-road cruising, and hilly terrain. We take these conditions into account when restoring radiator cores, ensuring they can cope with warm temperatures and modern fuel and traffic conditions while remaining true to the vehicle’s original design.
We regularly work on classic cars, vintage utes, trucks, tractors, and heritage machinery, including popular NZ classics from the mid-20th century. Every restored radiator is fully tested before leaving our workshop, giving you confidence it will perform reliably once refitted.
If you’re restoring a classic vehicle or dealing with overheating issues, restoring the original vintage core radiator is often the best long-term solution.
